NPC Design

1. What other games have you designed for?

Kobayashi-san: I was in charge of character design for Musashi: Samurai Legend and Mario Hoops 3-on-3, which was developed in Osaka.

2. Are there challenges involved in creating real-world characters as opposed to fantasy characters?

I am more comfortable with real-world characters, so I didn’t face any new challenges, personally. The work did require a lot of research with various fashion magazines, for example, because I had to design quite a few NPCs (non-playable characters).

3. How many NPC designs are typically made, and how many of those make it into the final game?

In my experience, a couple of designs are typically killed before each NPC is fixed. The process was unusually smooth with this title, as relatively few designs were turned down.

4. Do you find male or female characters more challenging to design? Which is more fun?

Female characters are harder. Subtle differences in age, for example, are expressed by slight variations in an artist’s touch. But they also are more fun to design. Their hair and fashion vary widely, so I have plenty of opportunities for exploration.

When I first played the game I saw all the NPCs when reading their thoughts and I was quite mind blown as to how here could be so many diffrent designs and how someone could eb bothered to make them.
Like the pokemon games only have a few designs, don't even change the colours and give them titles of the model of NPC they are, and those games are considered very well made.

Honestly. It looks kind of like this: Neku is Sora, that pink-haired-girl is Kairi, Beat is KH Seifer. I'd still like to check this game out despite the similarities.

Because it's stylized? If you look, their bodies are definitely not in proportion. It's all exaggerated. If their shoulders can be one-head-width wide, then they can be skinny little things. Normal proportion for the shoulders is about two-head-widths wide. In other words, their heads are way too frickin' big. If their heads were down-sized, they'd probably look closer to normal/less anorexic. But that's the style

Concepts are nice and the style is extremely fresh,

however!

pixelled sprites are not up to the usual Square quality - it's hard to believe that it's the same company that produced KH:CoM and Sword of Mana not too far back. There's even a lot of indie stuff that puts these sprites to shame.

I suppose though if these are just sketched from the character designers and not the actual animators, there's still hope for the in-game visuals, but seriously, if these malformed, jaggy sprites make it into a game, I'd be really disappointed.

Well, these are just the overworld sprites, not the mugshots, so you don't have too much to worry about. Besides, the KH:CoM sprites look almost exactly like this o`__'o Seriously, what'chu talkin' 'bout Willis?

Also it's zoomed-in and low-res, so that doesn't help the visuals much. The sprites at actual size and resoloution look a lot better.

"Besides, the KH:CoM sprites look almost exactly like this"

the conversation has sorta passed, but for the record, they look nothing like each other (at least to someone who works with pixels on a regular basis...maybe the average eye doesn't see the difference).

Seriously lacking designs.
They pretty much look like dress up dolls with different skin and hairstyles + clothes.

:S that's not exciting at all.

hey, that's pretty much the essence of anime.XP It's supposed to be like dolls, that's how they rake in the girlygirl audience(notice how EVERYONE is sickly thin) while saving time and effort. Most series have about 3-5 characters with distinct features, and the rest will be the same recycled face and body with different hair and clothing. But, I suppose it all works if you develop the mindset that clothing makes the personality.:P

Well if you look at older anime, such as lets say Robotech, people had somewhat distinct faces. Even if they do have the same appearance, their body language should say otherwise. What's stopping Shiro from drawing the gangster/ghettos as slumped over, hand in pocket/sweater? Or the Ganguro girl with her hand on her hip, head up and blabbing endlessly into her cellphone while playing with the charms on the phone?

Shiro is not only a terrible character designer, but he has no understandment of character design.

I'm a girl and I dislike most anime designs for those reasons. I prefer a more varied cast...
The super-thin aesthetic of Squaresoft's designs have become a little gruesome lately, and it's not an aesthetic I want to support by mimicking the art style. If I do end up entering the contest, my female will be more healthily proportioned.
You're right that this contest might as well be renamed a clothing contest, though. Most people are concentrating on that aspect anyways :/

Well, I think only a few square games have this aesthetic. Most just conform to the general standards of beauty. I guess what bugs me (aside from my lack of costuming skill) is that in ALL their games, the fashion aspect is such a prominent part of the character's designs. I almost feel it gets in the way of the story and gameplay sometimes. :p
